You don't need a fancy studio to practise yoga. A quiet corner, a mat, and a device are all you truly need. That said, thoughtful setup enhances comfort, safety, and consistency. Here's how to build a home space that supports your practice.
Ideally, choose a quiet, well-lit room where you won't be interrupted. Bedroom corners, spare rooms, or even a living room nook work. Size: you need roughly 6 feet × 3 feet (the length and width of a yoga mat). Natural light is lovely but not essential—a lamp or soft overhead light suffices. Avoid direct sunlight if it overheats the space. Temperature matters: 65–75°F is comfortable for most practitioners.
Yoga Mat: Non-slip, cushioned mat (about NZ$30–60). Prevents injury and gives your joints cushioning. A good mat lasts 2–3 years.
Device: Tablet, laptop, or phone to stream your yoga app. Mount it on a stand so you can see the instructor without craning your neck.
Props (Optional but Helpful): Yoga blocks (support in poses), bolster (restorative practice), strap (for stretches), blanket (for warmth in final relaxation).
Optional: dim lights, burn a candle, play soft ambient music or nature sounds. Minimise distractions—silence your phone, close the door, let household members know you're practising. A clean, clutter-free space reduces mental noise and helps you focus.
Start minimal: mat + free yoga app (like Down Dog's free tier) = NZ$30. Over time, add props as needed. Homemade substitutes work: a folded blanket as a bolster, books as blocks, a belt as a strap. Yoga's essence is free; the tools are just aids.
