Free vs Paid Yoga Apps: Where to Invest

By Sarah Mitchell ยท Updated 24/06/2026

Budget is often the first question: which apps let you practise for free? Here's an honest look at what each tier really offers.

Apps with Genuine Free Tiers

Down Dog: Free tier includes 500+ class generation, offline access, and full customisation. Premium (NZ$49/year) adds human voice narration and deeper features. Verdict: free tier is legitimately excellent. You can practise for life without paying.

Daily Yoga: Free gives you rotating classes but with ads and limited selections. Premium (NZ$59/year) removes ads and unlocks full library. Verdict: free is usable but feels limited; premium is where the app shines.

Yoga with Adriene: Free includes many full classes on the app and YouTube. Premium (NZ$79/year) adds exclusive content and bonus meditation. Verdict: free is substantial; premium is optional.

Paid-Only or Limited Free Apps

Yoga Studio, Glo, Alo Moves: Minimal to no free content. You pay upfront (NZ$69โ€“109/year) to unlock classes. Verdict: premium only; no free option.

What Premium Usually Adds

Budget Decision Framework

No Budget: Start free with Down Dog or Yoga with Adriene. Both offer excellent free experiences.

NZ$50/year: Down Dog premium. Best personalisation-to-cost ratio.

NZ$70โ€“90/year: Yoga Studio (variety) or Yoga with Adriene premium (community).

NZ$100+/year: Glo or Alo Moves. Premium production and instructor depth.
